THE 5 VIRTUES OF TAEKWONDO

The 5 virtues of Taekwondo are: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-control and an Indomitable Spirit.

Having spent most of my life in Taekwondo, competing and winning in Nationals, State Championships and becoming a 5th Dan Black Belt I turned to CrossFit to spice up my own training.

This journey into CrossFit, led me back to utilising one of the five virtues of Taekwondo I used everyday....Perseverance.

STARTING YOUNG

When I was between 10 and 11 years old, my master in Taekwondo told me that you will learn perseverance from hard training.  I did not understand at the time exactly what he meant, until a few months later.

We were all doing a "Plank" competition, to see who could hold the longest. After two minutes, most of the others failed, which left only a few still holding, including myself. By the end of the competition and ten minutes had passed I had come 2nd.

I really gave it my all and it was then that I realised the value and importance of perseverance. I also learnt that I could strengthen my inner-self, from the outside.

From then on, it was simple for me to go hard and do my best during my Taekwondo training. And even when I felt like stopping and giving up, I just kept pushing on. My Taekwondo skills got better pretty quickly and this is where winning State titles, Nationals and so on fell into place for me.

Understand that the true lesson I had learned through perseverance was that your inner strength will let you work hard and your physical capacity will grow and this happens back and forward. There is a constant interplay between the two.

THE FINAL QUESTION

I don’t know what life styles you have but I believe that we could all strengthen our ability to persevere, by utilising CrossFit and applying this mindset into your training, work, business, study and more.

I never give up any WODS, I always finish and I always do my best for each session.
